Lackland Air Force Base in Texas is a training hub for the U.S. Military. It is also a city in and of itself, with more than 9,000 people living within its boundaries.
In 2012, officials at Lackland AFB enhanced their emergency call system by verifying the locations of every telephone land line on the base and linking that data to each building’s GPS location to ensure 9-1-1 calls could be pinpointed immediately.
Still, that wasn’t enough to ensure rapid emergency response.
The enhanced database would only show responders where help was needed. It would not help them actually reach that addressing point.
After all, like every military base, certain roadways and areas at Lackland AFB are restricted. Some can only be accessed through keypad gates. Others are blocked by barricades to prevent vehicles from entering or to keep vehicles a safe distance from buildings. These safety measures, while clearly necessary, had created unintended obstacles for emergency responders seeking the most rapid and direct route to those in distress.
Digital Data Technologies Inc. (DDTi) added the critical mapping and vehicle routing components to Lackland’s emergency call location system to make it truly responsive.
